RTVE
RTVE advances its cloud-native transformation with Kubernetes and OpenShift
Modernizes its audiovisual platform with a microservices architecture on a hybrid cloud.
Radio Televisión Española (RTVE) is Spain’s leading public media corporation, with a strong commitment to public service based on quality, diversity, and editorial integrity. Its extensive content portfolio spans news, entertainment, culture, and educational programming, reaching millions of users through its television channels, radio stations, and digital platforms.
In addition, RTVE plays a key role in promoting culture through its involvement in audiovisual production and music broadcasting, further strengthening its position as a leading reference in Spain’s media landscape.
The Challenge
RTVE needed to evolve its technology platform to support the growth of its digital services and meet the high audience demand during peak traffic periods, particularly during prime-time broadcasts and major live events.
The organization operated numerous applications deployed across hundreds of virtual machines with statically allocated resources, designed to handle peak workload demands. Many of these applications were developed in Java and PHP and, in some cases, relied on monolithic architectures, resulting in complex maintenance requirements and limited flexibility for future evolution.
To embrace agile methodologies, automate continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) processes, and improve service scalability, RTVE embarked on a transformation toward a microservices-based architecture running in containers and orchestrated with Kubernetes.
One of the key requirements of the project was to ensure application portability across on-premises and cloud environments, enabling a true hybrid cloud strategy.
Solution
To address the client’s requirements, NexTReT proposed the deployment of Red Hat OpenShift, providing an enterprise-grade container orchestration platform with advanced capabilities and vendor-backed support.
This solution enables the deployment of multiple on-premises and cloud-based clusters, all managed from a centralized console, thereby supporting a true hybrid cloud model.
Leveraging the expertise of NexTReT’s development team, resources were provided to support the migration of the client’s legacy applications from various programming languages to a microservices-based architecture developed in Node.js and managed within a containerized environment.
Benefits
Improved Operational Efficiency
Operations automation, self-healing capabilities, and high availability (HA), significantly reducing manual administration tasks.
Scalability and Flexibility
Ability to dynamically adapt resources to actual audience demand and digital service requirements.
Open Architecture and Technology Independence
Use of open standards and cloud-native technologies, avoiding vendor lock-in and ensuring greater portability and flexibility across environments.
Resource Optimization
The adoption of containers instead of virtual machines reduced virtualization overhead and improved workload density, enabling more efficient use of infrastructure resources.
High-Performance Storage
Thanks to the integration of Ceph and local NVMe storage, RTVE improved the performance and resilience of its critical applications, ensuring greater reliability and responsiveness under demanding workloads.
Readiness for Continuous Innovation
The new platform accelerated development and deployment cycles, facilitating the continuous evolution of digital audiovisual services.
