Grupo Cierco

Optimization of the Virtualization Platform with Proxmox VE

Grupo Cierco is a family-owned business group, founded in 1946, with operations across various strategic sectors.

The diversity of its businesses requires a secure and adaptable technology infrastructure that ensures operational continuity, improves internal efficiency, and supports project development.

The challenge

Grupo Cierco needed to move towards a flexible platform that would ensure service continuity and protect information throughout the transition. The migration had to adapt to the characteristics of the existing virtual machines and be carried out with minimal impact. To reduce risks, the approach was to first review the environment, agree on intervention windows, and validate the procedure using non-critical machines. The organization needed an alternative offering greater flexibility, more control over the infrastructure, and specialized support both during the migration and subsequent operations.

Solution

Grupo Cierco entrusted NexTReT with designing and executing the complete migration of its virtualization environment to Proxmox VE. The proposal included the installation and configuration of the Proxmox VE hypervisor and Proxmox Backup Server, as well as cluster creation, Ceph storage configuration, and network and vSwitch design. The solution was designed to provide a flexible, centralized platform capable of protecting information through backups and snapshots.

The project was carried out progressively to minimize the impact on operations. First, a technical audit of the virtual machines was conducted, and priorities and intervention windows were defined.

The new platform was then deployed and the migration procedure was established, including the rollback plan, operating system adjustments, and testing with non-critical machines. Once the process had been validated, the migration of the remaining environment was carried out, followed by functional validation of the services. The project was completed with installation documentation and knowledge transfer to the technical team.

Proxmox VE was selected for its flexibility and compatibility with different operating systems, as well as for integrating virtualization, storage, and backup capabilities into an open platform. The solution reduces dependence on proprietary ecosystems and facilitates the future evolution of the infrastructure.

Following implementation, NexTReT provides specialized support to monitor the health of the cluster and backup system, apply updates, and address incidents or operational queries.

Results and Value Delivered

Significant Cost Reduction

The adoption of Proxmox enabled Grupo Cierco to significantly reduce the costs associated with licensing its virtualization platform. Thanks to a more open and flexible model, the organization reduced its dependence on closed ecosystems and was able to allocate more resources to initiatives that create business value.

Greater Technological Independence

The new infrastructure provides greater control over the technology platform and avoids vendor dependency, making it easier to evolve the environment in line with future business needs.

Secure Migration with No Impact on Business Operations

The project was carried out using a progressive methodology, with functional validation and a rollback plan, ensuring service continuity and minimizing risks throughout the transition.

Infrastructure Ready for Growth

Proxmox’s flexibility and compatibility enable Grupo Cierco to add new workloads and evolve its infrastructure with greater agility, adapting to future technology challenges.

NexTReT’s expertise in infrastructure and virtualization made it possible to combine consulting, implementation, and specialized support within a single project. Its technical guidance and phased methodology enabled a controlled transition aligned with Grupo Cierco’s technological and financial objectives.
