Proxmox Virtual Environment combines two technologies into a single platform with maximum flexibility for your production environment.

Characteristics

Proxmox Virtual Environment is a powerful open-source server virtualization platform that manages two virtualization technologies— Kernel-based Virtual Machine ( KVM ) for virtual machines and LXC for containers — with a single web-based interface . It also integrates out-of-the-box tools for configuring high availability between servers, software-defined storage, networking, and disaster recovery.

Server virtualization

The Proxmox Virtual Environment is based on Debian GNU/Linux and uses a custom Linux kernel. The Proxmox Virtual Environment source code is free and released under the GNU Affero General Public License, v3 (GNU AGPLv3).
The use of open source software guarantees full access to all features, as well as a high level of reliability and security .

Central management

To manage all tasks in your virtual data center, you can use the web-based central management interface . All web interface functionality can also be accessed via the CLI or REST API , which can be used to automate tasks.

Clustering

Flexible storage options

The Proxmox Virtual Environment storage model  is very flexible . Virtual machine images can be stored on one or more local storage devices or on shared storage such as NFS and SAN. There are no limits. You can configure as many storage devices as you like and can use all storage technologies available for Debian GNU/Linux. The advantage of storing virtual machines on shared storage is the ability to live migrate running machines without downtime .

Firewall

The Proxmox Virtual Environment firewall provides a simple way to protect your IT infrastructure. The firewall is fully customizable and allows for complex configurations via the graphical user interface or the command line interface.
You can configure firewall rules for all hosts within a cluster or define rules only for virtual machines and containers. Features such as firewall macros, security groups, IP sets, and aliases make this task easier.

Backup

The Proxmox Virtual Environment platform provides a fully integrated solution that utilizes the capabilities of each storage type and guest system. Backups can be easily initiated using the graphical user interface or using the vzdump backup tool (via the command line). These backups are always full backups , containing the virtual machine configuration, the container, and all data.
The integrated backup tool (vzdump) creates consistent snapshots of running containers and KVM guests. It essentially creates an archive of the virtual machine or container data and also includes the configuration files .
