Modernization of CCMA’s Big Data Infrastructure

The Catalan Corporation of Audiovisual Media (CCMA) manages the audiovisual media of the Government of Catalonia: the channels of Televisió de Catalunya, the stations of Catalunya Ràdio, and all CCMA’s digital media and platforms.

Its goal is to provide a high-quality, independent public audiovisual service, committed to Catalan culture and language.

The Challenge

Since 2015, CCMA had been developing Big Data projects to collect and analyze massive amounts of information on how its viewers and listeners consumed content, with the aim of improving personalized recommendations and enhancing strategic decision-making.

However, the infrastructure in use had become outdated, limiting its ability to process data in real time, handle large volumes of information from diverse sources, and ensure scalability during audience peaks. In addition, internal management required a high level of specialization, posing an operational and service continuity challenge.

Solution

CCMA decided to outsource the management of its Big Data infrastructure to NexTReT, implementing a comprehensive service combining migration, management, and continuous support.

All processes were moved to a modern platform with automated deployments using containers and infrastructure as code, enabling speed, reliability, and the ability to roll back changes in case of incidents.

The new infrastructure included continuous monitoring and 24×7 support, ensuring fast response times and efficient issue resolution. It also enabled automatic scalability of CPU, memory, and storage up to three times its capacity, ensuring load peaks could be absorbed without service disruption. Furthermore, mechanisms were designed for the integration of new technological components and knowledge transfer to CCMA’s internal staff.
